The Promonade

The promenade is one Galway's most popular attractions. It is a walkway which bridges the centre of the city with Salthill and goes a little further beyond. It is about 8km in distance. The promenade offers views of Galway Bay and a terriffic sunset is usually guaranteed. The views of Galway bay are most eclectic with stunning rays of light from the clouds and its fast changing weather patterns which transform on a whim. The colours of the water often are turquise but on other days a deep blue. The colour from the Burren which is in view the entire time present a unique sight with its soft pastel tones.

On the Promenade you will find half a dozen beaches which are kept in great condition by the locals and at the end of the promenade their is a local tradition of kicking a stone wall which brings good luck. Also at the end of the promenade which is referred to as Black Rock you will find a diving board. This area has frequent visitors who swim here not only in summer. It is usual for people to swim in winter. The promenade is also a place of festivities particularly in summer with numerous concerts and sporting events. There is an annual run around the promenade. There also is canoeing, fishing, walkers, sailors, para divers, and the usual scenes from a side resort feel.

Walking further on from the Promenade you will find rabbit island which is another 30 minute walk from Black Rock just past the Salthill Golf course. This offers more solitude and great views out to Barna and the other coastal villages leading out to Connemara. The Aran Islands is also in great view.
